Domestic violence is a serious problem that affects one out of four women in the United States. The numbers may change according to whether the people questioned are speaking about their former or current relationships. Sadly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when I interviewed professional therapists last fall who worked with victims of domestic violence at women’s centers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I heard over and over again that quite often, the woman would walk in the door and state that “something was wrong, but they didn’t know what it was.” The victim did not think of herself as a victim. She thought she had said and done things inappropriately to make her mate angry—so angry that he would slap her, call her derogatory names, hurt the children,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or threaten to leave her. The victim’s main concern was how to make her husband or mate “happy” and how she could do a better job at home. It never crossed the victim’s mind that this was not her fault, but rather, the batterer’s problem of control. Many times after that first visit, the client would not come back for months. It took months for the victim to realize there really was a problem and that she was not to blame.

Around the age of two, we realize we’re separate from our mother but hopefully we have an emotional bond which assures us that we’re safe and secure. We experience heightened sensitivity and may cry and find it a challenge to be happy and focused on our play when our mother is gone. How does this relate to boundaries? Simple. Our boundaries first develop when we’re a toddler and realize we’re separate from our mother. If our first experiences are anxious but our mother gives us unconditional love and makes us feel secure, we’ll develop healthy boundaries. We’ll know when it’s okay to honor our feelings and be okay saying ‘no’ to someone important to us without feeling afraid we will lose their love. We’ll be able to set boundaries that honor us and build feelings of security and safety apart from our mother.
Living with unresolved conflict without resolution can lead to a victim’s mentality. Continuing to not speak up just to ‘keep the peace’ results in our self expression getting smaller and smaller. Worse yet, we watch, listen and learn how others want us to behave so we can get along in this world because we want to be accepted. Harmony becomes the primary goal in our lives.
Ironically, the very thing you wish for, recognition for your uniqueness isn’t happening; you aren’t even noticed. And, when this continues over time, you may begin to feel like a ‘ghost.’ No one really knows who you are and you don’t know who you are. You may feel ‘lost, unmotivated, directionless…’
You may have read articles about middle-aged women who say they don’t know who they are and feel ‘lost’ after their children leave home. This is often referred to as ‘empty-nest syndrome’ and affects women more than men. Women tend to put the needs of their family ahead of themselves. They may ignore their hobbies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], cut back on their career obligations and spend less time with friends. As a result, they will often say, “Who am I?”

There’s nothing wrong with harmony if issues have been resolved and your needs are met. But when your needs are invisible, there’s a problem.

People around you are listening to your unconscious clues as to how you wish to be treated and they are respecting these signals.
Boundaries are essential for the creation and maintenance of healthy relationships professionally and personally and are the cornerstone for our emotional security. With clearly defined boundaries we know where we begin, and others start. We thrive when we value, love and ensure our own security.
This way of being creates a deep,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], pervasive fear of avoiding CONFLICT. We believe it’s better to keep quiet then get into a battle that may not make a difference anyway. “Patience and passage of time do more than strength and fury.”
When we are not in rhythm or sync with these wonderful cycles and processes of life, we become impatient. Lack of patience brings forth the feeling of desperation, fear, urgency and restlessness. Listen to your body. Being impatient is your body’s way of letting you know that you are out of rhythm with the cycles and processes of life. Instead of flowing with life, we are swimming against the current.
Life Lesson SIXTEEN
I could write an 800 page book or spend two weeks teaching a seminar on patients and I would only be scratching the surface.
Everything in life is unfolding perfectly. Yes.

Exercise for Mastering Patience:
3- When you find yourself in a situation that requires patients, take a step back and see what else you could be doing with your time. Maybe read a book, write, paint, re-evaluate your goals, go to the gym, clean your house, attend to things you have neglected, stop and smell the roses, daydream.

4- From a developmental stand point we, as humans on our journey are no different than a developing baby. We do not learn to crawl, walk,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and talk overnight. It takes time and patients for babies to master these abilities. We expect a baby to learn and grow now.. We have to be patient and understanding with their development. We are no different, when it comes to attaining knowledge, wisdom, intelligences,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and refinement-physically, emotionally, and spiritually. We all learn and grow at different rates; some people easily attain knowledge, wisdom, intelligence and refinement. Some take years, some take lifetimes. Our acts of kindness and understanding toward each other on our journey are the ultimate in our mastery of patience.

Patience,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], without a doubt, is the most complex as well as the most common of all the Life’s Lessons we are in need of mastering. Being impatient arises out of our inability to be in sync with the processes and cycles of life. A sense of urgency arises out of our inability to be in control of the final outcomes of life’s processes and cycles.
Emotional Patterns: Short Fuse, Rage, Anger,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Agitation.
We have been programmed by technology as well as the main stream media to be impatient. A hundred or so years ago, it took weeks, sometimes months for the mail to arrive by stage coach or pony express. What used to take weeks or months now takes seconds with the click of a mouse. What used to take weeks or months to travel from continent to continent now takes only hours. We went from dial-up to super fast high speed internet service. Phone calls from country to country happen in seconds. What has all this technology done to us? We become irritated when it takes an extra few seconds to connect to the internet, we get frustrated when a 3000 mile flight gets delayed an hour. The Go! Go! Go! Mentality has thrown us out of rhythm with life.
The universe/God has my best interest at heart. Yes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
I am at peace with the journey. Yes.
The media tells us; unless we have all this “stuff” we will not be complete. Which creates more fear, desperation, urgency and panic; which leads to a lack of patience. Once again we are thrown out of rhythm with life. Even with all this technology, it still takes nine months for a baby to reach full term. A farmer still has to wait for his crops to grow before harvest. Believe it or not, most of us still have to put in our time, starting from the bottom, and working our way to the top. Maturing as we, grow physically, emotionally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], spiritually and financially. Be patient, and embrace going with the flow of life
