This step is finding a way to share our feelings with other people. Not every feeling needs to be shared. What's most important is that we're in touch with them and able to make use of their wisdom and power, but often our feelings motivate us to share them in some way. It's up to us then to evaluate whether to let others know what we're feeling.
The idea of sharing feelings with others can be anxiety provoking for some of us. Sometimes we're afraid about how others will react. Here is where we can make use of some of our earlier steps (such as 'Taming the Fear') in order to more comfortably be able to open up and share them with others,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].

The reality is that our emotions stick around longer when we do things to try to avoid them. If we're able open up the experience and move with the energy, we're able to feel them through and get to a better place.
The most challenging step for most people is 'Taming the Fear'. We avoid our feelings because they're scary. When we get to the place where we start to feel afraid again,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the natural tendency can be to go back to avoiding them. Without any help, when we start to feel our anxiety again, our reflex kicks in and we tend to want to avoid them.

Working memory issues show up as forgetfulness, inability to hold information in mind for 20 seconds or more (weak short term memory), difficulty memorizing facts and remembering and following instructions, issues recalling and learning from the past,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and lacking a sense of the passing of time and how to use time for planning,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], completing tasks, and being punctual.
As you can judge from this explanation, people with ADHD who have working memory impairment find it difficult to complete projects, especially within a prescribed time period. But because of working memory issues that have not been brought under control, access to these abilities and skills can be blunted. It is necessary for anyone with significant working memory issues to get help, especially as they affect ones progress in school or at work.
Help for working memory issues come in many forms but tend to follow the following guidelines:
- Capture and write down information on index sized cards that can be easily manipulated.
- Draw mind maps (pictorial representations on paper) to create a “picture” of what your project or subject looks like when all of the facts and pieces are recorded in one place as they relate to each other,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
- Develop a system you can use for whenever you have the need to access working memory in any setting or set of circumstances. When you learn to use one system,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you will find you can generalize it to other needs and projects with minor changes.

That is how Gary Craig describes Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT. I had the pleasure of meeting him at a lecture in Boulder, Colorado the summer of 2009. The last goal is to moderate your expectations. Remember baby steps. Your child might get up on time some days and not on others. She might do her homework on her own for a day or two but have a meltdown about a new type of math problem. Try to notice the progress,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and not be too discouraged by the slip-ups. Always praise progress. And consider whether you can learn from the slip-ups. Maybe the program needs adjustment.
Some of you may have seen the old Bill Murray movie,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], “What About Bob.” Murray plays a man who is very dependent on his psychiatrist,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], played by Richard Dreyfus. Dreyfus encourages his patient to make progress in his life by “baby steps.” He has even written a book by that name. It’s a good spoof on the mental health profession. Dreyfus is making a bundle with simplistic advice,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Bob is ultimately the undoing of his pompous doctor.
But it takes baby steps. Another way of putting this is that all change happens slowly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], bit by bit. If you are dealing with grade school or older children, you will need to include them in the conversation. They need to agree that the change you suggest is worthwhile. Then you can discuss how to start. For instance, when should the alarm be set? How much time does your child need to get ready in the morning? Or you will need to explain just what you mean by rude and say what you would like instead. (This may sound as absurd as the baby steps book,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but believe me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it is helpful to be very clear.)
Change takes time. A few good days don’t mean you are out of the woods, but a few good days are definitely a few good days. Progress happens in baby steps.
When you have explained the goal and your child has agreed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you might also consider incentives to increase your child’s motivation. Incentive does not need to mean expensive stuff. It could mean a special dessert or fifteen extra minutes of screen time.
